Today is a very special date. I don’t usually recognize this date. It’s not a date that I celebrate - but for some reason I thought about it this year. Are you on the edge of your seat waiting to know why this date is so significant? Scoot back, it’s really not that exciting.
On this date, November 30 – I had my very first date with my husband. I just turned 17- a junior in High School. He was 15 – a sophomore in High School. (He was one month away from turning 16 – I wasn’t that much of a cradle robber.) 17 years ago on this date. Ironically enough, it was a Friday night 17 years ago. 17 years. Half of my life. I was 17. He was 15. That seems like eons ago - yet, at the same time, it seems like yesterday. Too funny.
Shall I tell you about our first date? It’s a funny story. I don’t even think Kemp could drive, so we went out on a “date” with a group of friends. Holly, Nick, Kemp, Me and – yep, you guessed it – Kirsten! We’re all packed in an old school Honda Prelude – yes the one from the 80s. (For those of you that were born in the 80s – it was a teeny car.) We go out to dinner – have a good time. After dinner, we’re going to go back to Kemp’s house to hang out for a little while. In the car on the way back to his house, a song comes on the radio. Always by Atlantic Starr. You know the one. It made all the girls swoon back in the day. Aaaawwww…how romantic…maybe this will be “our song”, I’m thinking. Well….not so much. You see, that night in the backseat of an old school Honda Prelude, my BFF and my future husband serenaded each other the ENTIRE SONG! Keep in mind that both of these people truly have amazing voices. I might be amazing at something – but it’s definitely not singing. So here we are – all three in the back seat – me in between them while they are gazing into each others eyes singing lyrics like “I will love you so for always” and “you’re the perfect one for me”. And I’m not talking about just singing the words – they were singing the words to each other. Talk about feeling like a third wheel – on my date! Awesome first date memory, huh?
When I tell people how long we’ve been together, that we’re high school sweethearts, one of the first questions asked is “Did you ever break up?” The answer is yes. We were “on a break” (Friends reference fully intended) for one week within the first two months of dating, but that’s the only time. That week was enough time, though, for him to smooch with some other girls. Aren’t you so curious to know who one of those girls might have been?!??! I’ll never tell. I may not ever tell.
Godspeed!

I want to see some high school pic’s!!! Maybe from the prom, or the courtyard…or by the big rock? Surely you got something to take me back. Oh and I want to know who he was kissin? Do you want me to go beat her (them) up? Mess up her big teased hair….
